The Environmental Management Authority’s Board of Directors chaired by Mr. Doolar Ramlal recently initiated a meeting with the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), led by the Honourable Farley Augustine, Chief Secretary of the THA, focused on advancing Tobago’s key environmental priorities. The meeting centred on streamlining regulatory processes, addressing major development projects, and strengthening inter-agency collaboration.
A significant outcome of the discussions was the proposal to introduce pre-application meetings as part of the Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) submission process. This step is intended to enhance efficiency, reduce processing delays, and ensure greater clarity for applicants from the outset.
The session also examined several high-priority environmental matters requiring coordinated action to protect Tobago’s natural assets. Key areas of discussion included improving waste management systems, updates on the proposed Marina Project at Friendship Estate, and the oversight of oil and gas-related projects in the region.
The meeting also facilitated the resumption of Clearing House Meetings, which will now be held quarterly between the THA and EMA. These Clearing House meetings are conducted pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the EMA and THA and are expected to further enhance collaboration between the two entities on environmental priorities.
In addition, the THA reaffirmed its intention to resubmit recommendations for amendments to the national noise pollution policy. Both the THA and EMA underscored their shared commitment to increasing public awareness on environmental issues and explored plans for a joint public education campaign aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
The meeting further emphasised the commitment of both agencies to supporting the Government’s thrust toward sustainable development, ensuring that environmental management aligns with national priorities and long-term resilience goals.
The discussions were led by the EMA’s recently appointed Board of Directors, chaired by Mr. Doolar Ramlal, and supported by Deputy Chairman Neeala Mongroo and Directors Kadeem Williams, Nova Johnson, Avinash Phagoo and Keydell Kerr.
The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge to strengthen cooperation between the THA and EMA, with both entities emphasising their dedication to addressing Tobago’s environmental challenges, supporting sustainable development, and safeguarding the natural heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.
